Fracture behavior of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk metallic glass under quasi-static and dynamic compression

چکیده
Fracture behavior of Zr55Cu30Al10Ni5 bulk metallic glass was investigated under quasi-static compression at strain rate of 10/s using an Instron testing machine and dynamic split Hopkinson bar (SHPB) compression with strain rate of about 1900–4300/s. Pronounced strain softening, especially past the peak stress, was observed under SHPB tests and compared with the distinct flow serrations under quasi-static tests. Scanning electron microscope revealed that the angle between the loading axis and major shear plane is less than 45°, deviating from the maximum shear stress plane. Microscopically, unlike the ordinary veinlike pattern found in quasi-static compression, the elongated veinlike pattern was observed at the onset position of rapid shearing under dynamic test. A closely arrayed dendritelike structure dominated the dynamic fracture, consequently, and should be the major pattern representing the rapid shear band propagation. In addition, a transition state from veinlike to dendritelike pattern was observed at the final instantaneous fracture region in quasi-static tests. Evidence revealed the characteristic dimension of dynamic fracture surface complies with Taylor’s meniscus instability criterion. The roles of free volume and adiabatic heating on the fracture strength and stress concentration on the fracture morphology are also discussed.

Fabrication and Mechanical Behavior of Ex Situ Mg-Based Bulk Metallic Glass Matrix Composite Reinforced with Electroless Cu-Coated SiC Particles
Magnesium-based bulk metallic glass matrix composites (BMGMCs) have better plasticity than the corresponding bulk metallic glasses (BMGs); however, their strength and density are often compromised due to the fact that the effective reinforcement phase is mostly plastic heavy metal. For lightweight SiC-particle reinforced BMGMCs, interface wettability and the sharpness of the particles often red...

The study of mechanical behavior of the structural steel S400 under quasi- static and dynamic loading has been the subject of this investigation. In oder to obtain different stress - triaxiality conditions the specimens were notched with 1, 1.5, 2 and 3.5 mm notch radius. The results of fractography show as the velocity of tension increases, ductility reduces and a ductile-brittle transition oc...

The mechanical properties of a new Fe41Co7Cr15Mo14Y2C15B6 bulk glassy alloy were studied by impact bending, compression, and hardness tests carried out at room temperature. The compressive fracture strength, elastic strain to fracture, Young’s modulus and Vickers hardness were measured to be 3.5 GPa, 1.5%, 265 GPa, and 1253 kg mm, respectively. The fracture mode of the glassy alloy under uniaxi...

We report on experimental evidence of pronounced global plasticity measured in monolithic Pt57.5Cu14.7Ni5.3P22.5 bulk metallic glass under both bending and unconfined compression loading conditions. A plastic strain of 20% is measured, never before seen in metallic glasses. Also, permanent deformation and a strain exceeding 3% before failure is observed during bending of 4 mm thick samples. متن کاملEffects of annealing and specimen geometry on dynamic compression of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass
High strain-rate compression experiments were performed with a split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) at 500–4000/s on cylindrical samples of a Zr-based bulk metallic glass (LM-1) in both the fully amorphous and annealed conditions. The effects of changes to the specimen geometry (i.e., L/D ratio) and the material heat treatment [i.e., annealing versus amorphous (as-received)], on the peak stress,...
